Overview
Super Mario Odyssey is a sandbox-style 3D platformer that returns to the open-ended exploration roots of classics like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. Players join Mario and his new ally, Cappy, on an epic journey across 14 different kingdoms, traveling aboard the Odyssey airship. The goal is to collect Power Moons—the fuel source for the ship—to track down Bowser and rescue Princess Peach from his forced wedding plans.
The game introduces a revolutionary 'capture' mechanic. By throwing Cappy, Mario can take possession of enemies, animals, and objects, granting him their unique abilities. Whether it's flying across gaps as a Bullet Bill, trampling objects as a Tyrannosaurus, or climbing electric wires as a Spark Pylon, this system completely transforms traditional run-and-jump gameplay. Mario also retains his classic moves, such as triple-jumping and wall-jumping, while adding new cap-based maneuvers like the cap jump and cap throw.
Designed to appeal to core fans, the experience is packed with secrets, collectibles, and diverse environments, including the realistic New Donk City. The game supports multiple play styles, from short bursts of exploration to long sessions, and is fully playable with Joy-Con controllers attached to the console, though motion controls can accelerate certain actions. For those seeking a social experience, a second player can join in using a Joy-Con to control Cappy independently.
Beyond the main story, Super Mario Odyssey offers extensive post-game content. Players can hunt for remaining Power Moons to unlock challenging bonus levels like 'Dark Side' and 'Darker Side,' or visit a special level based on Peach's Castle from Super Mario 64. With integrated amiibo support for special costumes and a dedicated photo mode for capturing the perfect moment, it is a comprehensive celebration of the Super Mario series.
