What happened

Why it matters

Xi stressed that they should ensure AI remain "under human control" and act "as responsible major countries", while Trump toasted a future of "harmony, peace and success" for both nations.

Common ground

But tensions remain despite the diplomatic niceties, including over Taiwan - with Xi urging Trump earlier in the day to take the "correct position" on the self-governing island which Beijing claims, amid a weapons package paused by Trump.

Perspective signals

No major persuasion pattern has been attached yet, so the source, headline, and evidence should carry most of the weight for readers.

Follow-up questions

What concrete event or decision sits underneath the headline: Trump and Xi exchange warm words at state dinner but little progress on key issues?
What evidence would most clearly confirm or weaken the claim that Their arrival was marked by protesters shouting from just outside the White House gates, some of whom were arrested?
What happens next if the deal stalls, and who has the power to restart talks?
