Horizon Forbidden West is a cinematic action role-playing experience developed by Guerrilla Games. Players step back into the boots of Aloy, a resourceful hunter and clone of scientist Elisabet Sobeck, as she ventures into the uncharted frontier of the Forbidden West. The journey is a quest to save the biosphere from a mysterious plague while navigating a world populated by dangerous, animalistic machines and hostile human rebels.
Designed for deep immersion, the game leverages the Decima engine to deliver breathtaking visuals. On PS5, players can experience the world in stunning 4K and HDR, with a Performance Mode targeting 60fps for fluid movement and animations. The environment is realized in incredible detail, from towering mountain peaks to the smallest sprigs of leaves.
Combat is strategic and evolved. While bows and arrows remain central, Aloy now utilizes the Shredder Gauntlet for tearing armor and a variety of specialized ammo types, such as acid to melt armor and shock to stun enemies. The integration of the DualSense wireless controller adds a tactile layer to the experience; haptic feedback lets you feel the grass during stealth approaches, while adaptive triggers simulate the tension of a bowstring or the resistance of heavy mechanical weapons.
Exploration has been significantly expanded beyond the first game. Players can now dive into underwater environments using a diving mask, glide through the air, and use a grappling tool to reach difficult areas. The world is filled with diverse activities, including clearing rebel outposts, completing salvage contracts, and overriding Tallnecks to reveal locations of interest.
Whether you are navigating the civil war of the Tenakth tribe or exploring underground dungeons known as Cauldrons, Horizon Forbidden West offers a refined evolutionary experience. It combines a high-budget production—costing approximately US$212 million—with a rich, character-driven narrative and a vast array of customizable skills and gear.
